‘High-speed trains to span Turkey’ In 10 years, high-speed train tracks will crisscross the nation, Turkish State Railways (TCDD) Assistant General Manager Erol İnan has said. On March 13, Turkey's first high-speed train line will enter into operation. The 200-kilometer line will run between Ankara and Eskişehir and will be inaugurated with a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The route will cut the 180-minute train trip from Ankara to Eskişehir down to 80 minutes. But this line is only the beginning, İnan told the Anatolia news agency. "We have to build a high-speed rail network across the country in 10 years, and we will do it." He said the TCDD had finalized a tender for the construction of rail between Ankara and the Central Anatolian province of Sivas and that construction would begin soon.

"When the track between Eskisehir and İstanbul is complete, Turkey will have high-speed train service from Sivas to İstanbul. Another ongoing project is the line between Ankara and the central province of Konya. We will launch that route next year. All these projects will be finished in three years," Inan said.

Turkey began constructing its high-speed rail lines in 2003. The first phase of the project was the route between Ankara and Eskişehir. When the rail between Ankara and İstanbul is laid, travel time between the two cities will be 3 hours, less than half of the current 6 hours and 30 minutes. The TCDD purchased its first high-speed train, which can reach a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour, from Spain's CAF company in 2007.
