Muslims begin Ramadan holy month !
Aug. 22 - The Islamic holy month of Ramadan begins across most of the Muslim world, ushering in 30 days of dawn to dusk fasting and extra prayer.
Here in Indonesia, devotees in the world's most populous Muslim country attend prayers and flock to markets at the start of the Ramadan holy month.In the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, thousands gathered at the Istiqlal grand mosque to pray for peace on Friday (Aug 21), hours ahead of the start of Ramadanon on Saturday.The timing of Ramadan varies according to the first sighting of the New Moon. The ninth month of the Muslim calendar, Ramadan marks the day, more than 1,400 years ago when the first words of Islam's holy book, the Koran, were believed to have been revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Ramadan ends with the first sighting of the next new moon, culminating in the three-day festival of fast-breaking - Eid-ul-Fitr.
